7 signs your website is costing you enquiries

Most business owners know their website is a bit tired. What they don't always see is what it's costing them.

A customer finds you on Google, taps through on their phone, and lands on a site that looks ten years older than your business. They can't find your number. They're not sure you service their suburb. So they hit back and call the next business on the list. You never hear about it, because a lost enquiry doesn't leave a voicemail.

If your business is busy and well regarded offline but your website doesn't reflect that, here are seven signs it's time for an upgrade.

1. It looks older than your business

Your work has moved on. Your vans are signwritten, your team is sharp, your reviews are strong. But your website still has the stock photos and layout from when you first set it up.

Customers judge credibility in seconds. If the site looks neglected, people assume the business might be too. That's not fair, but it's how people shop.

Quick check: Put your website next to your best competitor's on the same screen. Which one would you trust with a $5,000 job?

2. It's hard to use on a phone

Most local searches happen on mobile. If customers have to pinch and zoom, scroll sideways, or hunt for your menu, a fair share of them will give up.

A mobile friendly website isn't just one that "shrinks" to fit. It's one designed for thumbs: big tap targets, readable text, short forms, and your phone number one tap away.

Quick check: Open your site on your phone and try to call yourself or send an enquiry. Count how many taps it takes. Our free mobile thumb test can help.

3. There's no clear next step

Every page should answer one question for the visitor: what do I do now?

If your call to action (the button or link that tells people what to do next) is buried at the bottom, says "Learn more", or is missing entirely, people leave without acting. Good sites make the next step obvious on every page: Call now, Get a quote, Book a time.

Quick check: Land on any page of your site. Can you see how to contact you without scrolling?

4. Your services are lumped onto one page

If everything you do sits on a single "Services" page with a few bullet points, you're making it harder for customers, and for Google, to understand what you offer.

Separate, well written service pages help people find exactly what they need. They also give search engines a clear signal about what you should rank for. One page about "plumbing" will struggle against a competitor with dedicated pages for hot water, blocked drains and gas fitting.

5. There's no proof you're good at what you do

Reviews, completed projects, real photos of your team and your work. These are what turn a visitor into an enquiry.

If your site has no reviews, no examples and no faces, customers have to take your word for it. Most won't. Proof is often sitting in your Google reviews and phone camera roll already. It just isn't on your website.

6. It's slow, broken or out of date

Slow pages, broken links, an old copyright year in the footer, a "latest news" post from 2019. Each one is a small signal that nobody is looking after the site.

Speed matters too. If a page takes too long to load on mobile data, plenty of people won't wait around to see it.

7. You're embarrassed to send people to it

This is the simplest test. If you'd rather give someone your phone number than your web address, your website isn't doing its job.

Your website should be the thing you're proud to point people to. It's working for you 24/7, including when you're on the tools, with a client, or asleep.

What a website upgrade should actually fix

A new website isn't about looking pretty. It's about getting more of the right people to pick up the phone or fill in the form. A good upgrade should give you:

  • A professional, custom design that matches the quality of your business
  • A mobile first layout with clear calls to action on every page
  • Proper service pages that explain what you do and where you do it
  • Real proof: reviews, projects and photos front and centre
  • Search foundations built in, so Google can understand and index your site from day one
  • Ongoing care: hosting, security, backups and updates handled, so it never goes stale again

At Launch North, that's what every website build includes. We design and build professional custom websites for Australian small businesses, with fast turnaround, straight talk and no agency runaround. Website packages start from $1,000, with Hosting and Care plans to keep it secure and up to date.

What comes after launch

A new website fixes the foundation. Once it's live and converting the visitors you already get, the next question is how to get more of them.

That's where SEO (search engine optimisation, the work that helps you show up in Google for the searches your customers make) comes in. With the right site in place, SEO builds on it: keyword research, targeted content and stronger service pages, so you rank for the searches that bring enquiries.

Fix the website first. Then grow the traffic. That order saves you money.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my website needs a redesign or just a refresh?

If the problems are small (an old photo, a broken link, outdated copy), a refresh may do. If the site is hard to use on mobile, has no clear calls to action, or doesn't reflect the quality of your business, a rebuild usually gives a better return than patching an old site. Our guide to website redesign vs a new website goes deeper.

How much does a new small business website cost in Australia?

It depends on the size of the site and what it needs to do. Launch North's website packages start from $1,000, with optional monthly Hosting and Care. You can compare what's included on our packages page.

Will a new website help me rank on Google?

A well built website gives you the foundations Google needs: fast pages, mobile friendly design, clear structure and proper service pages. Ranking for competitive searches usually also takes ongoing SEO work after launch. No one can honestly guarantee rankings, but a strong site makes every bit of SEO work go further.

Do I need to write all the content myself?

No. We work with you to get the right information about your business, then shape it into clear, customer friendly pages. You review and approve everything before it goes live.

Do you only work with Brisbane businesses?

We're Brisbane-based and Australian-owned. We work with businesses across South East Queensland and around Australia.
