What UTMs are

UTM parameters are tags added to a link so Google Analytics can tell where a visit came from. They show up in GA4 as session source, medium and campaign, which makes it easy to compare newsletters, social posts and partner links.

How to use the builder

  1. Paste the page you want people to land on.
  2. Pick a preset or type your own source and medium.
  3. Name the campaign, then add term, content or ID if useful.
  4. Copy the URL or open it to check it loads.

Naming convention guide

Keep values lowercase, use hyphens instead of spaces and reuse the same names every time.

UTMs and Google Ads

For Google Ads, auto-tagging is generally the better choice for native measurement once your Ads and GA4 accounts are linked, as it passes click level data UTMs cannot. UTMs remain useful for manual and cross platform campaigns. If you want help setting that up, see our Google Ads management.

Common mistakes

Inconsistent capitalisation

Email, email and EMAIL become three rows in GA4. The lowercase option helps.

Tagging internal links

UTMs on links between your own pages restart the session source. Only tag links from outside your site.

Vague campaign names

Names like test or promo are meaningless in six months. Include the offer and a date.
