How responsive search ads work

A responsive search ad is a set of up to 15 headlines and 4 descriptions. For each search, Google assembles a combination, usually two or three headlines and one or two descriptions, and learns over time which combinations perform.

Headline and description limits

Headlines allow 30 characters and descriptions 90. Each ad needs at least 3 headlines and 2 descriptions. The two display paths allow 15 characters each and only change the green URL text, not the landing page.

How asset rotation works

Because assets rotate, each headline must make sense next to any other. Mix benefits, services, locations, proof and calls to action rather than rewording the same line. The combinations shown here are illustrations, not predictions of what Google will serve.

Pinning considerations

Pinning fixes an asset to a position, which is useful for compliance wording or a brand name. Pin sparingly: every pin reduces the combinations Google can test. Pins here are for planning, and are honoured in the samples.

Common RSA mistakes

  • Near-identical headlines that give the system nothing to test.
  • Repeating the keyword in every headline.
  • ALL CAPS, repeated punctuation or exclamation marks in headlines, which Google's editorial policies restrict.
  • Headlines that only make sense in a fixed order.

Pair your ads with tracked landing URLs from the UTM Builder, or let our Google Ads team manage the testing.
