What rel=canonical does

A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the main version of a page when the same content can be reached at several addresses, for example with tracking parameters, filters or print versions. It is a strong hint, not a command.

How to use this canonical URL checker

1. Enter a public page URL, or paste the page HTML with its URL if the site blocks automated requests.
2. Review the final URL, status, the canonical as written and as resolved, and the robots signals.
3. Work through the notes. The summary reads Looks consistent, Review recommended or Issue detected.

When self-referencing canonicals make sense

On most pages, a canonical pointing to the page's own clean URL is a sensible default. It stops parameter and tracking versions competing with the main page.

Duplicate content misconceptions

There is no general penalty for duplicate content. Google usually just picks one version to show. Canonicals help you choose which one, rather than leaving it to chance.

Common canonical mistakes

• Two canonical tags from a theme and a plugin disagreeing with each other.
• Every page canonicalising to the homepage after a template error.
• Canonicals pointing at redirected, http or non-preferred host versions.
• Combining noindex with a canonical to another page, which sends mixed signals.
